Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am very honoured, in my capacity as Chairman of the African Union, to  address you today, worthy sons and daughters of Africa, on this symbolic day  of 25th of May, which marks the celebration of Africa Day.
This date, much more than just a moment of commemoration, is a call to  memory and commitment: to remember the personalities who built the first  foundations of our continental unity and to commit ourselves to the ideals  that the African Union has carried since its creation.
Indeed, the Founding Fathers of the African Union played a central role in  the emergence of a pan-African political consciousness and in the struggle  for the independence of the continent's countries.
At a time marked by colonialism and splintering, visionary African leaders,  including Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, Julius  Nyerere of Tanzania and Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, among others, laid  the foundations for African unity, calling for solidarity, emancipation and  cooperation between African states.
Their commitment led to the creation of the Organisation of African Unity in  1963, the forerunner of the African Union, to strengthen political and  economic ties between the newly independent African Nations.
The importance of these historical individuals also lies in their long-term  vision of an African continent capable of controlling its own destiny. By  promoting regional integration, the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the  defence of African interests in the international arena, they established the  fundamental principles that still guide the African Union today.
Their legacy is visible in the AU's ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic governance, promote sustainable economic development and ensure peace  and security across the continent.
As we pay tribute to the struggles, sacrifices and shared vision of these  illustrious Sons of Africa, we renew our faith in an African future based on  solidarity, peace and cooperation between peoples, but also on building a  continental Organisation with solid institutional foundations.
 Excellencies,
 Ladies and Gentlemen,
Carrying on this important legacy means preserving the vision of a united,  strong and sovereign Africa, capable of speaking with one voice on the  international stage.
The struggle for the political emancipation of our continent is a compass for  today's generations in the face of contemporary challenges such as political  fragmentation, internal conflicts and other scourges that unfortunately  plague our continent.
This is why we advocate respect for the principles of solidarity, cooperation  and mutual respect, so that we can continue to build a more integrated  Africa, where borders become bridges and not barriers.
Let us fulfil our goal of keeping alive their dream of a future in which each  African country has the means to meet the needs of its citizens, drawing  mainly on its own resources and talents. Today, honouring their vision  means investing in education, promoting good governance, strengthening economic integration and supporting the younger generations in their  aspiration for a dignified future.
Today, Africa faces a number of complex challenges that delay its full  emergence, despite its immense potential.
With regard to peace and security, we note with concern that many regions  of the continent continue to experience situations of instability due to  transnational terrorism and violent extremism, armed conflicts and  intercommunity tensions, among other harmful phenomena.
We are also particularly concerned about people living in conflict zones,  often forced to flee their homes and denied a bright and prosperous future.  This is compounded by political and institutional crises, which are  frequently characterised by unconstitutional changes of government and  contested transitions, a weakening of the rule of law and fragile governance.
On the socio-economic front, Africa is doing all in its power to meet the  challenge of inclusive development in such an uncertain global context.
Youth unemployment, limited access to education and health, dependence  on poorly diversified economies and the effects of climate change are  obstacles to achieving sustainable prosperity on the continent.
The growing debt of certain countries and their vulnerability to external  shocks, such as health crises or global economic turmoil, exacerbate  inequalities and social fragility.
These challenges require concerted responses, strong institutions and a  renewed political will, in line with the aspirations of the African peoples.
Excellencies,
 Ladies and Gentlemen,
Despite the challenges that lie ahead, we maintain an unwavering faith in our  continent, Africa, which today, more than ever, embodies a land of hope and  promise, driven by dynamic youth, abundant natural resources and  constantly renewed creativity.
With more than 60 per cent of its population under the age of 25, the  continent possesses a unique human capital, capable of innovating,  transforming local economies and tackling the great challenges of the 21st  century.
Every day, sectors such as digital technologies, renewable energies,  sustainable agriculture and the cultural industry reveal Africa's potential to  reinvent itself, create value and actively contribute to the world economy.
This hope is also based on a growing collective awareness of the need for  integration, responsible governance and endogenous development.
This is why this year we have chosen to highlight initiatives such as the  African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), cross-border infrastructure  projects and citizens' movements in favour of transparency and human  rights, which demonstrate the existence of a new dynamic underway.
Indeed, Africa is no longer just a continent deserving of support, but a  strategic actor in the making, offering solutions for itself and the world.
Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
the African Union's theme for 2025, ‘Justice for Africans and People of  African Descent through Reparations’, is extremely important for building  an equitable future that is conscious of its past.
By highlighting historical injustices such as the slavery and colonialism  trades and their repercussions today, this theme paves the way for collective  reflection and concrete action to restore the dignity of the African people and  their diaspora.
It is a call for restorative justice, to recognise the wrongs suffered, but also  to reaffirm the right of Africans to be actors in their own history, promoting  a shared memory, moral, economic and symbolic reparations and renewed  global solidarity.
We believe that reparations for Africans should be seen not only in terms of  the past, but as a leverage for building an equitable future through  constructive and sustainable partnerships.
That means creating multi-faceted investment mechanisms in education, health, infrastructure, ecological transition and technological innovation  that enable African countries to strengthen their economic and social  empowerment.
These partnerships must be based on a principle of equity, far from the logic  of exploitation or dependency, in order to create win-win relationships  centred on mutual respect and co-development.
In this sense, reparations become a strategic tool for redressing historical  inequalities, while at the same time stimulating inclusive development, led  by and for Africans.
Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
In conclusion, on this Africa Day, we remember not only the founding  achievement of continental unity, but also the spirit of fraternity, courage  and vision that guided the Founding Fathers.
As we look to the future, let us remember that every action, every policy,  every commitment must serve the design of a free, prosperous and united  continent.  Celebrating Africa today means renewing our faith in its potential, affirming  our collective responsibility and strengthening our commitment to sincere,  respectful and ambitious cooperation.
May this day be more than a commemoration, but an inspiration for a new  era of hope and common construction.
Thank you very much.
